What a rip off, 10 dollars at Home Depot! By Meehlticket (Fairhope, Alabama, USA)
I bought two of these YESTERDAY and they cost me $12.98 each, TODAY they are under $10. I checked with Home Depot last night and realized they have them for $10. Dumb me, I should have read the reviews. We'll see how they work for me in our hot and humid summers.

Had great results with both cherry and regular tomatoes last year, so going to only go upside down this year.

2 Words ... Don't Bother!! By April
If you're thinking at all about buying this product, I strongly suggest you don't. I thought I would give it a try. Not having to stake my plants sounded great. Next year, I'm going back to planting my tomatoes right side up.
The planter itself is kind of a spendy investment. Especially if you plan to have more that just one plant. If you're like me and don't have the option of hanging them on your house or from your porch, you also have to invest in shepherds hooks. But the planters were so heavy that I ended up having to sandwhich the hooks between a couple fence posts to keep them from bending. Then I also had to buy bricks to try to keep them from coming out of the ground. And the first stiff breeze (or squirrel) that comes along, downs the whole thing, breaking the plants off at the base. Which means having to start over again with all new plants. In the end, I ended up investing a lot more money than I had ever intended.
Supposedly this planter helps you get bigger plants with higher yields. That is not the case. What plants I had that survived, looked terrible and produced little. Some never bore fruit at all. I think part of the problem is that they dry out too fast. The sun may warm the soil (which supposedly helps that plants grow better,) but all the moisture evaporates and escapes through the big opening in the top. The soil inside bakes into a nice brick. Which doesn't help the plant to grow.
The package says that you can use the Topsy Turvys for multiple years. Not so! They were so deteriorated at the end of the season, that when I went to pull them down, my fingers went right through the sides. All that money for 3 months.
Skip the Topsy-Turvy. They are too much cost for too little benefit. Buy a pot, a cage, and a spool of twine. Then use the money you save to take your family to the movies.

5 Gallon Bucket Works Better By Anna Surbeck (Hoquiam, WA)
Like other reviewers have said, you can make a better one out of one of those reusable grocery bags. There is a reason the new upside down planters have openings on the sides. The water drains down the plant causing rot. The cables and hardware rusted. The green printed bag faded in the sun.

Terrible! By T. Spergel (Naples, FL)
We planted 3 tomato plants and got 4 cherry tomatos from one of them. The planter itself completely disintergrated before the season was through. I won't even bother to plant the strawberries in the "free" hanging planter. This was a horrible investment. Also it needs to be watered very often. Certainly didn't work for us as advertised.

Awful! By K. E. Cline (Pensacola, FL USA)
I purchased this kit from LTD Commodities. It is terrible! The "moss" is a dehydrated block which becomes a big, soggy, falling-apart mess after you rehydrate it per the instructions. And the seeds are nearly microscopic and FEW. Are they made of gold or something that they only give you 5-6 teensy weensy strawberry seeds? Good grief! Don't waste your time.

Ugly basket, no plants By cinbun911 (Northern California)
Basket is ugly, chain is cheap and shiny, plastic liner shows through. PLUS, no plants came up. Seeds were expired. Transplanted some Buzzy Hanging tomato plants into and they died. Because of the plastic liner, it doesn't drain and it's difficult to guage how much water it needs. Very disappointed.

I love this product! By Marsha I. Steverman (Acton, MA United States)
The seeds are teeny-tiny, and there aren't very many of them, which would be my only complaint. However, the basket, with the moss in it etc...is beautiful, and in addition to the seeds, I planted some seedlings, and this plant is growing beautifully! Great deal for the money I paid.

Love it! By S. Ruiz (Camarillo, CA USA)
I went looking for the Topsy Turvy and found this instead. With the TT, you also had to buy the dirt and the seeds. The Hanging Basket includes the basket, dirt, seeds, moss, and chain for the same price. I bought this a little late in the planting season so I did go out and buy the plants (1 cherry tomato and 1 red pepper plant) but also planted a few of the seeds that were provided. The plants are now producing red cherry tomatos and the seeds are just about 2 " tall. I love that I can use this for veggies when the season is right and also for plants if I like. I would have given this a 5 star if it were bigger but I still love it.

Ugly basket, difficult to guage watering By cinbun911 (Northern California)
The chain is really shiny, the plastic liner shows through and the moss dries out and gets everywhere. Because of the plastic liner, there is no drainage and it's easy to overwater. If you water less, it's easy to underwater. The plants all died. Very disappointed.

Too Many Tomatoes By James E. Furlich (Charlottesville, VA)

great for balcony By Lynne McAvoy (Syracuse, NY USA)
This product works great so far. My sprouts are only about an inch high, but they're growing. The directions are easy enough to follow, but could have been better. If you buy this, it would probably be easier to put the sphagnum moss in the basket and let it dry and then put the dirt in. I didn't do that, and now the dirt and water fall out every time i water them. Also, i would suggest mixing the dirt they give you with some other dirt, like potting mix or soemthing. This dirt dries out and in order to water it, i have to poke holes in the dirt to get it to sink down.
Other than that, this product is great for me. I live in an apartment, and they work quite well hanging on my balcony. They get a lot of sun and don't take up a lot of room, which is wonderful. Makes growing tomatoes easy for those without a yard.

a lot for your money (of entertainment anyway) By P. Diehr (Seattle, WA USA)
This package included a hanging basket, sphagnum moss, soil, and seeds. Thus far i have gotten the seeds to sprout, and look forward to trying to get some tomatoes in a few months. It is too soon to tell if i will. but it has been fun, and the kit was complete. The hanging up chain isn't very long, so i will probably have to extend it.

cheap, but low quality. By Michael F. Emig
My 10 year old daughter was influenced by the commercial and begged me to buy the Topsy Turvy. For the price, it wasn't too bad, but it is of very low quality construction. Also, watch out for sharp wire terminations.I poked myself several times while assembling. It's a novelty, like a toy or science experiment, but I don't think it worked any better than a traditional pot. Also, it's basically a single plant/season use.

waste of money and time... By researchbeforeyoubuy (Rowlettt, TX United States)
It's hard to keep the plants watered and then the water runs down onto the plants...causing burns when it's during the middle of the day and then problems from the fungus in the soil also running down onto the plants from the water.
Save the time and money and grow them some other way.

Save your money everyone! Those I received began to split and tear after about a month, and toward the end of the season they were completely in tatters. The plastic "bags" just fell apart, making it impossible to water, as the water washed out the soil, thus no tomatoes for me this year! I'm very angry as I had been given information that they were "wonderful." Not so!!!They were a complete rip-off!

Big Disappointment! By K. Driehorst (Atlanta, GA)
We purchased the Topsy Turvy in an effort to save space in our herb and vegetable garden since the tomato cages take up so much space. The soil 'bag' was very heavy, so we staked anchoring cords to hold up the double shepherd's hooks - no big deal. The instructions said that you could plant two tomato plants per bag, so we did. And we selected a medium variety of tomato so that it wouldn't get too heavy for the upside down set-up. But, after two months, with daily watering, the tomato plants have barely grown, and have only yielded 7 small tomatoes total - between the two plants! And, it looks like that will be all we'll get from both plants. We used great vegetable potting soil, so I don't think it's that. Rather, I suspect that the foam rubber 'ring' that holds the dirt in at the base is in effect cutting off the plant from growing and thriving. Next year, we're going back to the cages and setting up a separate garden for tomatoes and peppers. Hope this helps anyone else. I don't know how others get the good results, if they do.

Very Good - Has many plant ports By Talkingrock (Atlanta, GA)
Unlike similar products that have only 1 plant port at the bottom, this version has 10 ports. One at the bottom, and 9 on the sides, so you can grow 10 plants total.
The side ports hold smaller plants like herbs, and the bottom port can hold a heavier plant like tomato.
Just double-check and confirm how many ports the planter has before you buy. Multiple ports are better than just one.

Looks Beautiful By Sadie (Houston, TX)
This is a great item. I bought starter plants from the local garden center and inserted them into the planter with some organic soil. The only mistake that I made was that I used garden soil, and you really need to use potting soil for this planter. I have it hanging on my porch and it looks absolutely beautiful. I planted my strawberries a couple weeks ago and they are doing well so far. I do not have any strawberries yet but I expect this plant to do well. I have been told that it is impossible to plant strawberries in the ground in my area because the strawberries get eaten up by bugs. I have not had any bug problems with this planter so far. One minor drawl back is that it is easy to damage the roots when inserting the plants into the planter. I think this problem could be improved with a better design.
